Return to the book list for this category.

G Eisen, Canadian Journal of History of Sport and Physical Education, 6, 2, PP45-65 1975

The article includes two clever quotations about sport “Sport in some form or other is the main object of most lives, that most men work in order to play” Arnold Lunn and “The Greeks believed in the holiness of beauty, the Jews believed in the beauty of holiness” Max I Dimont.

The author mentions the following activities with the relevant Bible verses cited

• Weightlifting

• Fighting – being a warrior

• War sports – archery, javelin, fencing, sling

• Horses

• Chariots

• Hunting

• Swimming

• Running

But concludes “There is no definite proof of systematic physical education in the time of the Bible, but we have to assume a thoroughgoing dance education”.
