London 2012 Olympic Games: The greatest show on earth

Return to the book list for titles beginning with 'l'.

London, Carlton Books, 2012 . ISBN: 978-184732-933-2

For anyone who was privileged to attend the London Olympics, this book is the perfect souvenir. Taking one day at a time, the book devotes 6-8 pages to the day’s events. There is a report on what happened with a good balance between GB and the world. There is, for each day, a table giving details of any world or Olympic records. My favourite section is that choosing for each day a Team GB and overall Games moment of the day. These are not necessarily medal winners. Sometimes it is just a lovely human story.

The photos are just spectacular – either a full page shot or up to 6 images of the day on one page. They really capture the mood of the games.

I turned first to day 8 – Super Saturday. I don’t suppose those of us who were in the stadium during that amazing 45 minutes when Jess Ennis, Greg Rutherford and Mo Farah took gold. The final event of the day was the women’s 100 metres when Shelly-Anne Fraser-Price retained her Olympic title – I just hope they did not have to engrave that on her medal! All four and others are recorded for posterity with stunning images.

Like all good sports books it ends with 6 pages of statistics.

I cannot believe there is anyone in your family who would not like it for Christmas.
