The team in Benin

"Serious sport has nothing to do with fair play…it is war minus the shooting."

George Orwell

Benin Tournament

In February 2009 the Amis du Monde, girls football team was asked to represent the country in an international tournament in the neighbouring country Benin. The Togolese Football Association paid half their costs and Verité Sport made a contribution as well. We were delighted to be able to help give the girls this opportunity as they seek to apply their skills and play in a way that honours God.

The team won their group games against teams from Mali and Benin (2-0 and 1-0). In the semi-final they finished 0-0 but lost on penalties 4-5 to the team from Burkina Faso. The won the third place game 9-0 against the Niger team. What bad luck to be eliminated on penalties after not conceding a goal in 4 games!
